Search Engine Optimization - Start Correctly
In order to succeed online, you must optimize your website ( called Search Engine Optimization, or SEO ) for the Internet search engines. Every website we design is initially optimized based upon the tools we use when we design the website. While we don't guarantee any particular results, we do know that if your website isn't initially optimized any further efforts at advertising will be compromised. We'll do the following:
Search Engine Optimized Meta Tags
Title, Keyword and Description tags are critical to allowing search engines to know what your website is about. All search engines are different in how much weight they put on these tags, but it's necessary to have them done right.
Search Friendly Top Level Pages
It can be critical to actually have a few top level pages that exist outside the database. We help identify what those pages should be and develop content specifically for them. The pages will still pull content from the database, but the actual URL will be database independent.
Search Engine Friendly Page Naming
All top level pages will be named with keywords in the name itself. For example, we have a page ourselves called "searchengineoptimization.html" which is specifically designed to gain search traffic for those keywords. The "Index" page is the exception since it's the default page picked up by all Internet browsers.
No Domain Re-directs
It is essential that the URL not be redirected at all. Your domain should default to a page named "default" or "index". Search engines don't like being redirected and many simply won't follow your site.
Search Engine Friendly Page Content
Webpage content is specifically matched to your meta tag information. We do a whole host of things to ensure that we enable as much search engine friendly content as possible. Here is a list of some of the things we do in the content of each page:
Heading Tags
H1, H2, H3, etc. Heading tags must include the keywords listed in the meta tags.
Links
All links include the SEO friendly keyword in the link itself (instead of "click here" we use "Search Engine Optimization" to link to this page).
Keyword Density
make sure the keywords listed in the meta tags are actually used in the page content sufficiently.
Relevant Text
Keywords alone aren't enough. Your content must contain words associated with the keyword. Search engines are getting very smart at recognizing pages that have keywords but no other relevant text.
Image Text
It's important that all images have alternative text so that browsers can identify what the content represents. A visually appealing page does nothing for you if the search engines can't determine what the page is about.
Page Layout vs. HTML Layout
It's important to design your webpage so that when the search engine searches that page that it encounters keyword text as soon as possible, and that it represents a large portion of the HTML that it's reading. For example, some developers include all kinds of special coding at the beginning of a web page (maybe for graphics, menu's, formatting, etc) which inserts thousands of characters of code. The search engines then have to read through all of that before they get to the actual page content. If this is the case, it doesn't matter what your keyword meta tag is, because the search engine may leave your site prior to reading the page content.
CSS Formatting
CSS stands for cascading style sheets, and are essential in formatting web page content. Why does it matter for search engine optimization? Well, that's a good question, and it relates directly to the topic above. If you include in every page the html code to handle formatting, you can literally add thousands of characters to a web page. By including a CSS page to handle formatting, you can tell each page to referrence it, thereby eliminating the need for coding each page. This means that if the search engine has a maximum number of characters that it will scan, your content stands a better chance of being read.
Search Engine Submission
On top of everything above, you need to let the search engine community know that you exist. When we are finished with a website, we will submit it to all the major search engines. Usually, within 30 days they will send their search spiders to come find your website.
YOUR NOT DONE YET!
Once we have done all of the above, you will need to follow up on it with an actual marketing strategy. Normally this will include pay-per-click services like Google and Yahoo, banner advertising, email campaigns, etc. On top off all that, you need to do one more thing - which happens to be the most important thing according to Google:
Build Incoming Links
There are many ways to build incoming links, and they all happen once the website has been designed and is live. There are internet portals, other search engines, individual websites, etc. that can all link back to your site if they wish to do so. You need to have a strategy to get those sites to do just that. This takes time and you must be persistent. You should aim for a minimum of 30 inbound links before you expect to move up the search results of the major engines. NOTE: We now offer this service ourselves (by request of our clients) at the cost of $25 per inbound link. Email us for details of this service.
Search Engine Optimization Conclusion
It is our goal to launch your site to be ready for the world of the Internet. If it is search engine optimized out of the box then you stand the best chance for success.
